Ways To Ensure Boiler Safety

Boiler Safety

Boilers used to require constant upkeep and maintenance, but developments in digital technology have meant that you're now less likely to notice if something is wrong with your boiler. A set of safety checks exists though; you can implement these to ensure that your boiler and home gas appliances stay safe.

Boiler Upkeep

Take out a boiler insurance policy from your energy supplier or a third party. If your boiler or heating system breaks down suddenly breaks down you should not have to pay any costly emergency fees.

Typical cover is in the region of £15 a month, but like many, if this includes your annual boiler service then you've instantly saved yourself around £100 (the average cost of a boiler service).

Annual Checks

In order to work within the law, your gas boiler technician should be Corgi (the Council for Registered Gas Installers) registered. If you have an oil heating system then contact the Oil Firing Technical Association for the Petroleum Industry to find a local, registered technician.

Carbon Monoxide Intoxication

Carbon monoxide(CO) is a colourless, odourless and potentially lethal gas. It's emitted by household appliances a result of incomplete burning of gas.

CO poisoning can occur via a shared flue or chimney, and occurs when:

" The appliance is faulty.
" The appliance wasn't installed properly.
" Ventilation around the appliance is inadequate.

An audible CO alarm can also be fitted. These cost around £25 and will alert you if carbon monoxide is detected in your home, much like a standard fire alarm.

Expenses

If you struggle to meet the cost of your yearly boiler service, contact the Energy Saving Trust (EST), your energy supplier or your local authority to see if you qualify for free checks through the Priority Services Register.
