Diabetes Treatment: How To Avoid Complications?

Diabetes is characterized by an excessive rise of blood sugar. When complications of diabetes occur it is often a little late. It is for this reason that treatment and diet must be strictly respected in order to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Diabetes is a silent disease which often leads to serious complications

Diabetes is a prevalent disease in the world. There are two types of diabetes, one requires insulin and the other  can be treated through diet or drugs. Diabetes is a silent disease which we realize only when there are complications.

The complications of diabetes can be seen in two types of diabetes. Since the disease is not talking by itself, it is necessary to avoid its complications.

Diabetes: Several types of complications

Two types of diabetes complications: the metabolic complications and organic complications.

The first is the result of a rapid imbalance of blood sugar, which may result in a coma when blood sugar is too high or too low, or an intense dehydration (ketosis).

The second is the long-term consequences of hyperglycemia, on the whole body, but especially on the blood vessels which clog, and the nerves that no longer function. For instance, when the arteries of the eye are affected, there is a significant risk of blindness, or when the sensory nerves in the legs are affected, skin lesions are not felt and getting worse so quickly. From a broader point of view, patients with diabetes have an increased sensitivity to infection.

A Question of Balance.

The Diabetic balance is necessary to understand. It is also a concern for the therapist who prescribe the treatment.  All treatment of diabetes (insulin or drugs) are based on the principle of maintaining blood sugar close to normal, and whose variations remain the lowest possible.

How to avoid diabetes complications?

- The first basic principle to avoid the complications of diabetes: respect the prescribed treatments by a doctor and even certain diets.

The personal changes in the treatment of diabetes can be done only after education and training throughout the course. Generally, patients with diabetes who use insulin receive this training because they must often react in real time to changes in blood sugar, almost hour by hour.

The problem is different for diabetics who have no insulin and are not subject to such surveillance. They have a tendency to neglect  diet rules.

- Second basic principle to avoid the complications of diabetes: the almost continuous surveillance of diabetes. It is the role of doctors (check-ups of the eyes, kidneys and heart), but also the role of the diabetic patient, which itself must check the condition of his skin and foot.

- The third basic principle is to prevent general infections (vaccines), dental and ENT (ear, nose, and throat).
