Diabetes Information-confessions Of A Type 2 Diabetic-part Two-discovery And Disbelief

Looking back in retrospect (there's an oxymoron for ya) it is hard to describe the feelings I had when those words "you have diabetes" were heard. Disbelief and maybe numbness. I say those words now because I remember doing nothing about it for quite a long time.

Hindsight is 20-20 they say. If I only knew then what I know now or better yet had I had a better doc. Not trying to shift the burden of responsibility here but he was no f….n help at all. If I had started a plan of action right from the start to get control of the disease who knows I might have avoided a heart attack and my angioplasty.


Of course everyone reacts differently. The point is what you should do when you first find out you have diabetes. We'll get to in a future article.

In all fairness before I found out I had the "big D" I had syndrome x and sleep apnea. Both sure fire signs you are on your way to getting Diabetes. Sleep apnea and syndrome x are at least in part caused by being overweight.

Syndrome X is insulin resistance a condition that leads to Type 2 diabetes. It takes years to develop. The cells of the body become resistant to insulin forcing the body to make more. The symptoms for it are slowly increasing blood pressure and cholesterol, gaining weight slowly but surely, and feeling tired after you eat.

It is, some say, inherited. Insulin resistance is caused by eating too many/much refined carbohydrates like breads, pasta, and sugary foods including sodas. Other factors can include a sedentary lifestyle and obesity. Gosh that sounds just like me in my other life.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep.

If it is left untreated it may cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches.

A major contributor to sleep apnea is being overweight.

An estimated 14 million Americans have pre-Diabetes. Pre-diabetes is the state that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.
