Begin Fighting Depression!
Depression is a relentless enemy. It knocks you off balance and pins you to the ground. It makes you feel as though you have no strength to get back on your feet again. Well, that isn’t true – you are stronger than you think. You have the strength, and all you need to do is to get back up and fight depression.
Depression makes you focus on nothing else but your sadness. You idle all day, filling your psyche with self-defeating thoughts. Nothing you do seems to help you feel better – that is, until you ask yourself: “Do you I really like feeling this way? Do I want to be depressed?”
The answer is obvious: Of course not!
Don’t convince yourself that there is no hope – nothing could be farther from the truth. You have more strength in you that you could ever know. Don’t linger in your depression – fight back!
A good and easy way to pick yourself up would be to keep yourself busy. Depression makes you do the opposite – you don’t feel like doing anything besides sitting or lying down all day. By doing so, you perpetuate a vicious cycle – being idle allows more and more self-defeating thoughts get to you. In other words, the longer you sit around doing nothing, the worse the depression gets.
Keep yourself from idling around. As soon as depression rears its ugly head, get on your feet and move. It doesn’t matter what it is – get up and do something. When you’re busy, you won’t think about your woes too much. For most people, merely getting up is extremely difficult, and many feel terrible forcing themselves to leave their little cesspool of self-pity. That shouldn’t matter. Get up.
You might feel like giving up within a few minutes of getting up and doing something – depression will almost always give you the urge to sit back down and idle. Don’t give in – keep moving. As you stay on your feet longer, you’ll begin to feel better. It won’t be long before you’ll be rid of your woes.
On the other hand, getting on your feet only to sit down and eat won’t help much in fighting depression. While you’re eating, it’s easy for the mind to drift back to the thoughts you had while on your bed or chair. This can prolong depression.
While eating, take something to read. Reading fills your mind with other kinds of thoughts (preferably happy ones, so try to reach for something other than the daily newspaper). You can also keep your mind busy by playing a simple game. Take a piece of paper and write a word on it – for instance, “central.” Then try to form other words using letters from that word, such as “cent,” “real,” and “recant.” When you think you can’t find any more words, one usually pops up into mind right away. This game, which may sound silly to some of you, still succeeds in giving you a sense of accomplishment.
Perhaps an even better way to get rid of depression is to do nice things for other people. When you think of other people and their needs, you become less self-absorbed. Helping other people with their problems gives you the feeling that your own problems are not that bad – and that’s an encouraging thought.
Depression is unproductive, and does nothing but waste your time. Remind yourself that you were put on this world for a reason, and that reason should be worth looking and fighting for. So don’t give in to depression – fight back!
