Understanding Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Treatment

Today, we have so many treatment options available for any type of disease. The various treatment options that are available for breast cancer have increased too. One such treatment for breast cancer is called “chemotherapy” treatment. But the moment any person learns that she has breast cancer, she should then not panic but must learn to have a strong will power. She must have a positive mind. Breast cancer cells tend to become aggressive within a short time and the patient finds it hard to handle this situation and that is why most women are required to undergo chemotherapy.

The cancer cells which are present within the body of the patient who is suffering from inflammatory breast cancer tend to block the lymph nodes in the inner layer of the breast skin. The cancer cells, keep on attacking the patients lymph nodes, at an alarming rate. This type of tumor is known to be as one of the worst forms of breast cancer. Chemotherapy is one of the options which a doctor would normally suggest. Chemotherapy is a way of treating cancer with the help of drugs. Since cancer cells tend to grow in an uncontrolled way, chemotherapy drugs are used in order to slow down or stop the cancer cells from growing, multiplying or even spreading to other parts of the patient’s body. In some women suffering from breast cancer, the risk factors are greater than others. It all depends from person to person. Since everyone is different, everyone’s cancer based situation is also likely to be different.

The doctor is likely to suggest chemotherapy for those patients whose lymph nodes are affected by cancer. Also the tumor size may be of big size or of a higher grade. At times the doctor may suggest chemotherapy along with other treatments which includes surgery and radiation. Chemotherapy (use of chemicals) can be considered as a systematic therapy. Chemotherapy is known to be a powerful treatment and it has side effects too. Chemo brain is considered to be type of side effect. It is a decrease in the cognitive brain function, which may or may not improve over time. Also, there is fatigue which lessens over a period of time. The patient may gain weight at this stage of treatment. It is advisable to do regular exercise and also diet changes can be of great help towards the aim of reducing one’s weight. The drugs used for chemotherapy treatment may lead to side effects like nausea and skin rashes. Bone loss also becomes an issue, especially when women have reached the early menopause stage after chemotherapy. Calcium supplements should be taken to deal with this issue. A chemotherapy named as adriamycin is likely to cause damage to the heart.

During the application of chemotherapy, even some of the healthy cells can get damaged. This damage of healthy cells, leads to side effects example loss of hair etc. This damage is found to be on the temporary side because in the matter of time, healthy cells get repaired by themselves. If a person is diagnosed with breast cancer and are offered a wide choice of treatments, then it can be very confusing. It all depends upon what stage the cancer patient has reached. A particular cancer patient who is undergoing chemotherapy, may not have the same side effect as the other patient. It depends from patient to patient.
