3G Mobile Phones - past, present and future
Until 3G mobile phones entered our lives a little over 5 years ago, we were perfectly happy with making calls and sending text messages to our friends and family. No one had ever considered the possibilities of taking a picture on their phone and then being able to send it to someone by the touch of a button, nor did they think that it would be possible to view websites in a similar way to that done on their home computers.
Now, due to the power and speed behind new technology we are able to complete all these tasks thanks to Third Generation technology, more commonly known as 3G. One of its biggest selling features was that of video calling, meaning that people for the first time were able to see the face of the person they were talking to on the screen of their phones.
Although 3G coverage on many networks is stronger than it was a year or two ago, it’s still not possible to know whether or a video call can be made to another person as they may not be in a 3G enabled area, or they may not have a 3G enabled phone without calling ahead or receiving a ‘call failed’ message.
Many networks expected 3G to be a way to increase their revenues but in many cases this has not happened. By pushing the capabilities of 3G technologies further a new system known as High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is slowly being introduced and is expected to be widely used in the next 18 months. This means that internet access is now even faster than it was and we will soon see many operators offering broadband like packages via our mobile phones.
